MBE working groups are making technical progress

Working groups are meeting regularly to work on standards recommendations.

The working groups (WG) of the ASME Model-Based Enterprise Standards Committee (MBE SC) met several times over the past month. Below is a brief status update for each WG.

Terms WG
Leader: Curtis Brown, cbrown@kcnsc.doe.gov
Type: Chartered
The Terms WG met twice in September. The meetings consisted of the initial kick-off meeting with a review of the WG Charter describing the overall purpose and key outcomes and benefits. The WG also received a presentation that described the National Nuclear Security Administration's structured approach to construct and format controlled vocabularies. The WG also began reviewing existing repositories of definitions related to MBE.

Use Cases & Model-Based Standards Development (MBSD) WG
Leader: Will Sobel, will@govimana.com
Type: Chartered
The Use Cases & MBSD WG reviewed and revised its charter; it now reads as follows: "The Use Cases & MBSD WG defines the methods the MBE SC will use to develop use cases and model-based standards”. The simplified charter will clarify the WG's focus on standards-development methodology. The WG also began discussing a white-paper outline for the November meeting to gather best practices being used in industry. On September 20, the WG heard about the SWISS (Semantic Web for Interoperable Standards) activities for indexing and cross referencing documents used in manufacturing using RDF models. Scheduled for the upcoming teleconference on October 4, the WG will receive a presentation about work going on at ISO TC184/SC4 regarding mapping EXPRESS to SysML and OWL for Model-Based Definition.

Near-Term Strategy Ad-Hoc WG
Leader: Bryan Fischer, brfischer@tdp360.com
Type: Ad-Hoc
The ASME MBE SC Near-Term Strategy WG is developing recommendations for near term goals and deliverables for the ASME MBE SC. The WG is still in the early stages of work. Some ideas relate to near-term needs in industry (such as extensions of existing material, additional tools needed, recommendations for best practices, etc.), some ideas relate to operations (such as interfacing with other standards activities), and some ideas relate to foundational elements for the long-term vision of the ASME MBE SC.

The ASME MBE SC is actively seeking additional members for each chartered working group. Experts willing to contribute toward the work products of a WG, become eligible for WG membership by submitting completed PAF and PF-1forms to Fred Constantino at constantinof@asme.org. Please indicate the WG(s) you are willing to assist when you submit your completed PAF and PF-1 forms. Questions about either WG may be sent to the WG Leaders.

When completing the PF-1 form, please enter the following information in the corresponding fields:

  • Applicable Committee: The MBE WG you are willing to assist (i.e., Framework WG, Terms WG, or Use Case and MBSD WG)
  • ASME Staff Contact: Fred Constantino
